Careers Hive is an annual, week-long free event run by Edinburgh Science Learning. Initially developed in 2016, Careers Hive inspires S1-S3 pupils to pursue a STEM-based (science, technology, engineering and maths) career through hands-on activities, workshops and discussions with young STEM professionals. This year the event takes place between 25 February and 1 March at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. The programme includes discussions with aerospace engineer Naziyah Mahmood, FIFA assistant referee Vicki Allan, entrepreneurs and more as well as activities with robotic cubelets, giant hearing aids, app design, among others. Nearly 3000 pupils from 37 schools from around Scotland take part in Careers Hive. New for this year, Edinburgh Science Learning and volunteers from engineering industries created and developed two hands-on activities: Robots Assemble and EnginEARing, supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Ingenious fund. To further encourage teachers to engage with their students about STEM subject, Edinburgh Science Learning is holding a free Teacher Afternoon Friday 1 March. Careers Hive brings together education practitioners and businesses to complement Developing the Young Workforce – Career Education Standard (3-18) produced in September 2015. It addresses the learners’ ‘I Can’ statements by the end of Broad Generational Education: S1 to S3. /ENDS
