DISTINGUISHED FLYING MEDAL : FLIGHT SERGEANT ARTHURFRANK EMERSON, RAFVR. SQUADRON. - Now on his second tour of operational duty this airman has taken part in a large number of attacks on some of the most heavily defended targets in Germany. In November 1943, he was rear gunner in an aircraft detailed for an attack on Dusseldorf. During the outward journey flight Sergeant Emerson's electrically heated clothing became unserviceable, but despite the intense cold he did not report this to his captain but remained in the turret. After crossing the Dutch coast, when owing to the intense cold his fingers were frozen, the aircraft was attacked by an enemy fighter which wounded the pilot and put the turret out of action. Flight Sergeant Emerson managed to open fire and the hostile aircraft broke off the attack. Four minutes later the aircraft was again attacked by an enemy fighter, the navigator being killed, the wireless operator fatally wounded and the captain and flight engineer wounded. With practically all the instruments and hydraulic system useless the aircraft continued to the target which was bombed successfully. Flight Sergeant Emerson maintained his watch in the turret throughout. At all times he has shown cheerful confidence in the face of the enemy, courage and devotion to duty.
