Canadian engineer. dingvery largely on the nature of the earth composing theprism of the road, earth of a gravelly nature being muchless expensive to maintain than the soils in which thereis a large portion of clay. If the maintenance costs given above are correct, and they have l)een taken from statistics gathered fromother places, principally in the United States, whereextensive schemes of road work have been carried out,it will be seen that the sum, annually spent per mile inNova Scotia by the Legislature, is not more than suHicicntfor the maintenance of the existing mileage of roads. The installation of culverts and work done undervarious Acts has done much to improve the conditionof the roads in the different counties, and the roads soimproved, although they will still require a sum for main-tenance, will not need the same amount of annual ex-penditure as in former years. Where road expenditureshave been made out of capital on roads in which per-manent culverts have been built, the improvements ^.Abstracted from the report of the Highways Division. Norton Covered Bridge o\er Cornwallis River. A finetype of Wooden Truss still doing good service. of course, most marked, but e\en where culverts onlyhave been installed, the ditching done to make the cul-verts effective has benefited the roads vastly, and theexpenditure for maintenance out of revenue should be\ery much lessened. The question of road maintenance in Xova Scotiais still a matter of the greatest importance, and one towhich close attention must be constantly given, not onlyfor future betterment, but to protect those highways uponwhich expenditures have already been made. .As soonas the construction of a road has been completed, it isnecessary that its maintenance should begin. Too oftenthis has not been the case. On the contrary, after a con-siderable expenditure has been made upon a section ofroad, the idea .seems to prevail that any maintenanceis not necessary for some time. This is a mistake. .
