BRUGES, Belgium — The historic carillon bells of the Bruges Belfry combine centuries of bell-casting tradition, featuring 26 18th-century Dumery bells and 21 modern Eijsbouts bells. Together, these 47 bells, weighing a total of 27 tons, create the distinctive sounds that have rung out over Bruges for generations. The massive bell chamber houses both historic and contemporary examples of bell-casting craftsmanship.

Photograph by David Coleman. The carillon in Bruges' Belfry represents one of Europe's finest examples of historical and modern bell-casting artistry. The combination of 26 bells cast by Georgius Dumery between 1742 and 1748, and 21 bells added by Koninklike Eijsbouts in 2010, creates a comprehensive musical instrument capable of playing complex melodies. The impressive six-ton bourdon anchors this musical ensemble, which has a total weight of 27 tons. Each bell demonstrates the sophisticated metallurgical and acoustic engineering required to achieve precise musical tones. The preservation of the 18th-century Dumery bells alongside modern Eijsbouts additions showcases the evolution of bell-casting technology while maintaining the carillon's historic character and musical quality. This combination of old and new bells enables the carillon to continue its centuries-old tradition of providing music for the city's celebrations and marking the passage of time.
