Threadworms in intestine. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of threadworms (Trichostrongylus vitrinus) in the small intestine of a sheep. Threadworms (or roundworms) belong to the phylum Nematoda, which has many species of parasitic and free-living worms. T. vitrinus is an important parasite of sheep. Here, threadworms are seen on the surface of, and burrowing into, the gut wall. The worms have elongated, cylindrical bodies that taper at both ends. The body is covered with a thick, tough cuticle secreted by the underlying ectoderm. Magnification: x60 when printed 10cm wide.
