The subjoined is the carriage of her attendants,in which may be noticed two odd-looking seats, calledboots, where two of the officers sat, as the Lord Mayorsdo now, back to back. We have heard of a lady, who lived during the civilwars of the seventeenth century. Her husband beingdetained a prisoner in London, she set out to effect hisransom. All the horses having been taken away by theother party, she put eight oxen to her carriage, and gotfrom Somersetshire to London in a fortnight! If she hadused horses, she might have accomplished the journey ina week, which now takes a Somersetshire Lady on her Journey. These coaches were very clumsy and uncomfortable*They had no springs; and the state of the streets androads occasioned sad jolting. As fashion, however, brought them into use, the nobility vied with each otherin the number of their horses, which were often increasedfrom two to eight. But, in the early days of coaching, itwas deemed to be disgraceful to any of the male sex toride in a coach. Coaches and chariots were not introducedinto Scotland till the early part of the last century= Before I ■ 240 OLD ENGLISH PHAETON. that time, we are told, the nobility used to travel in avehicle similar to a Noahs Ark.
