Expo 1992, Seville, Spain. Kuwait Pavilion. Architect: Santiago Calatrava

The exhibition hall was buried approximately 20 feet under a marble dome. Designed as a sculpture with flexible wooden arms that open and close to resemble a palm leaf, the pavilion was to express the history and life of the people of Kuwait. When closed the pavilion represents the protection of the Kuwaiti people. Halfway open it mimics the shape of a tent, protecting Bedouin people from the desert storms. Fully opened and resembling a ship's sail Kuwaitis lives as traders and explorers are celebrated. Made of poured concrete and steel reinforced wooden arms providing shade.
