Itis also planned to construct a branch line out Virginiaand Fairview Streets and thence to the University dis-trict, but these plans are only tentative. The Lake Burien line was built by a group of capital-ists some years ago from West Seattle to Lake Burien,a distance of 9 miles. The road was promoted by per-sons who owned property near Lake Burien, and thefirst car was operated on July 1, 1912. For four months. Seattle Municipal Railway—Example of Rehabilitation Workon Highland Park & Lake Burien Railway an intermittent service was maintained, and then a slidecovered the track for a mile and operation was aban-doned. The line has lain idle until recently when it wasturned over to the city free of all incumbrances by theowners, on condition that the city maintain a service sothat the property owners along the road who subscribedto the funds for the roads construction might haveaccess to Seattle. The council immediately appropri-ated $25,000 to be used in rehabilitating the right-of-way, half of which is in the city limits, and at this timethe line is practically ready for use. Of the $25,000appropriated by the Council to be used in preparing foroperations, $7,500 will be utilized in the construction ofa substation at Ninth Avenue Southwest and West Tren-ton Street. The Board of Public Works was recentlyauthorized to purchase the site and receive bids for con-struction a
