Salinas Grandes is the name of a salt lake bordering the Argentine provinces of Jujuy and Salta, located in the Puna of northwestern Argentina. They extend over an area of 212 km ² in the department of Tumbaya (Jujuy) and La Poma (Salta). The Salinas Grandes de Jujuy and Salta are practically the base level of an endorheic basin which continues northward Guayatayoc Lagoon, a lagoon that is very salty and alkaline. To the south and east, these salt are separated from the Humahuaca Ravine and the mountains of Chañi, Jujuy Province, while the north and west its limits become more diffuse in the Salt Puna desert. The origin of the Salinas Grandes is an extended period located at 5 and 10 million years. In this period, the basin of this salt was covered with water with lots of salts from volcanic activity. The gradual evaporation of such continental saltwater originated this salt that has a crust whose average thickness is 30 cm.
