This is of American manufacture, based onthe principle as that of Oudins resonator. Piffards Transformer. The transformer which I haveemployed since 1901 is the Piffard model, as shown inFig. 120. It consists of two condensers whose externalarmatures extend almost to the top of the glass, the Fig. Oscilloresonator. (\\illyoung.) internal armatures being connected with the sliding barsof the static machine or coil and terminating in metallicballs of small size. Originally there was a sliding bar spark-gap attachmentcovered with a glass tube to muffle the sound. This, how-ever, was found to impair the greatest working efficiency, and has been done away with, being replaced by projectionson either side an inch in length to act as a discharging HOW THE CURRENT IS PRODUCED 563 safety valve, so to speak, when the resistance of the spark-gap on the sHding bars of the machine becomes greaterthan the resistance between these two points, and thus toprevent damage to the apparatus. The strength of current employed is regulated wholly bythe slidmg bar of the static machine, one inch being usuallysuf&cient. When
