Miniature pencil drawing of Charles Gratiot. Following his graduation from the Military Academy in 1806, Gratiot, son of the fur trader Charles Gratiot was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers. He served with distinction during the War of 1812 and ascended through the ranks. He was brevetted a brigadier general with the Army in 1828.
