The Lower Bridge (Burnside's Bridge) in Antietam National Battlefield, Sharpsburg, Maryland.

The Lower Bridge (Burnside's Bridge) in Antietam National Battlefield, MD. The Confederate riflemen from Georgia were positined on this side of the bridge defending the southern flank of the Confederate army from attack. The ground on the far side of the bridge was open at the time of the battle and so the Union forces, led by General Burnside, could not attack the bottleneck without leaving cover. The Geogians delayed Burnside for most of the day, a significant factor preventing the Union side from winning the battle convincingly.
