Statue of a Roman General. 1st century BC, parian marble - This is most likely a statue of the owner of the house, portrayed here in heroic nudity. This was a Roman tradition which involved superimposing the portraits of Roman soldiers over the athletic bodies of ancient Greek heroes, in order to highlight the subject's virtues. There is a recess for a bracket on the statue's neck, suggesting that the portraied head was replaced and later irretrievably lost: perhaps the various generations of owners requested that the image be continuously updated - Museo Centrale Montemartini, Rome, Italy
