Kingswear Castle Passenger Steamer Passing the Royal Dart Yacht Club Heading Towards the Historic Old Castle: Dartmouth, Devon
The historic 'Kingswear Castle' passenger steamer heading down the River Dart in summer. This coal-fired paddle steamer 'Kingswear Castle' is the last of her kind working in Britain today. Built locally by Philip & Son of Dartmouth in 1924, she could carry almost 500 passengers on the river journey between Totnes and Dartmouth, where she worked up until 1965. She then spent a short spell operating from Cowes on the Isle of Wight before being moved to Chatham in Kent. Here the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society spent 15 years restoring her to the former wonderful condition. She was returned to the River Dart in 2013, fully refurbished with flush decks and wheelchair friendly gangways. It operates a summer service offering wonderful views along this scenic West Country river. In the background dingies and tenders are stacked on the Royal Dart Yacht Club pontoon and yachts are moored in front of waterside properties.
