He was a moderate German politician of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and served from 1919 until his death in office in 1925. His political positions / titles included President of the German Reich, Chancellor of the German Reich (Weimar Republic) and Prime Minister of Prussia, He was also an editor of the socialist Bremer Bürgerzeitung and had formerly been a journeyman saddlemaker by trade.
