Once at the top the interestcentres in the higgledy-pigglediness of the houses, thegay colours of the booths where strings of beads andother religious knick-knacks are sold, the glorious 332 ALPS AND SANCTUARIES. panorama, and in the inn where one can dine verywell, and I should imagine find good sleeping accom-modation. The view from the balcony outside thedining-room is wonderful, and on p. 331 is a sketchfrom the terrace just in front of the church. There is here no single building comparable to thesanctuary of Sammichele, nor is there any trace ofthat beautiful Lombard work which there makes somuch impression upon one in the church on the MontePirchiriano ; the architecture is late, and barocco, not tosay rococo, reigns everywhere ; nevertheless the effectof the church is good. The visitor should get thesacristan to show him a very fine pagliotto or altarcloth of raised
