. American engineer and railroad journal . rease the empty car mileage and be a sourceof expense instead of revenue for a good portion of its life. Visitors at the mechanical conventions at Atlantic City lastJune had an opportunity of inspecting a car which seems to carry the convertible idea to its greatest practical length. Thiscar represents, first, a standard 30-ton stock car and as such doesnot differ in any essentials from the usual car, as far as the in-terior arrangement is concerned. It can then be converted intoa covered gondola car with tight sides and floors and suitablefor conveying any lading usually carried in gondola cars, whichwould pass through the doors. It can then further be convertedinto a perfectly tight and satisfactory box car. When arrangedin either of the two latter forms it has the further advantageof being a drop bottom car, in which practically the whole ofthe floor area can be dropped and the lading discharged on eitherside of the track. In construction the car is of the composite type, having an. End deration.
