The Old Man of Hoy and St John's Head, on the island of Hoy, Orkney Islands. The Old Man is a classic sea stack, a 137 metre (450 feet) tall pillar of sandstone that has been eroded until it stands alone, connected only by a narrow neck of rock to the cliffs forming Hoy's western coast. Beyond it can be seen St John's Head, the highest perpendicular cliff in Britain at 351 metres (1140 feet). Both the Old Man and the cliffs are made of Old Red Sandstone dating from the Devonian Period (395-345 million years ago). 14 Oct 88. Wista 5x4. 300mm. 30th at No filter.
