In 1829, just before heassumed the reins of tlie government, he met withthe most terrible affliction of his life in the death ofhis wife, whom he had loved with a devotion which hasperhaps never been surpassed. From the shock ofher death he never recovered. His administration was one of the most memorablein the annals of our country; applaude/^ oyone party,condemned by the other. No man had more bitterenemies or wanner friends. At the expiration of histwo terms of office he retired to the Hermitage, wherehe died Tune 8, 1845. The last years of Mr. Jack-sons life were that of a devoted Christian
