Portrait of a, wounded, KNIL ,soldier,1882, by Isaac Israels 1865 - 1934 Dutch The Netherlands, oil paint , 37×23cm, This Ghanaian was given the name Kees Pop, son of Kwamena and Ekoerva, when he entered the service of the Dutch colonial army in the former slave fortress of Elmina – Ghana. 'Pop' entered service for twelve years in 1869 and fought in the Aceh War in Indonesia. Israels portrayed him – with medals – in the Netherlands just before his return trip to Africa.
