Looking SW across stream to a restored horizontal watermill (R) & kiln house (L) used to dry damp grain before milling. Shawbost, Isle of Lewis.

Looking SW across a stream to restored horizontal water mill (R) & kiln house (L) used to dry damp grain before milling. Water is diverted from higher up the stream via a stone-lined leat into lower part of mill where it drives a horizontal paddle whose vertical shaft turns the upper of two millstones in the room above. The buildings were restored by James Crawford: thatched roofs held on with netting, ropes & stones, protruding poles are called raven-sticks.
