Above-knee leg amputation. Sequence of artworks illustrating an operation to amputate a leg above the knee. This is the patient's left leg, with a severe crush injury (upper left) causing a comminuted fracture of the patella (knee-cap), fibula, femur and tibia. At upper centre, the amputation site is dissected to expose the femur, which is transected (cut) above the knee (upper right). At lower left, the musculature around the femur is transected and arteries, veins and nerves are isolated and tied off. At lower centre, the leg muscles are brought together and sutured over the femur. At lower right, the stump is created as muscle and skin flaps are sutured over the wound.
