Facelift surgery. Image 4 of 9. Surgeon performing a facelift (rhytidectomy) on a mature woman. Here, the surgeon is removing excess fluid beneath the skin using a suction tube (right). A retractor (left) is retaining the skin from the underlying muscle tissue. This procedure involves cutting the skin around the hairline and separating it from the underlying muscle. The muscles are then tightened and excess fat is removed. The skin is then lifted up and pulled back to produce a tighter, smoother face.
