Childhood of Bacchus. Roman marble relief from the 1st or 2nd century AD on display in the National Archaeological Museum (Museo Arqueológico Nacional) in Madrid, Spain. According to the Greek mythology, Mercury placed the child Bacchus in the care of the nymphs and of wise old Silenus on the plains of Nysa, in the Near East, where he spent his childhood.
