Verynge stories are told about him, and one of them high honor in many countries, and that he isespecially distinguished as the patron of youngscholars and children. Now you see that, in the old times, when greatattention was paid to the observance of saints days,it was very natural that St. Nicholas Day, the 6thof December, should be celebrated by the children,. THE PROCESSION. II give you in the very words of the old book in:h I found it,—written in the queer English offorefathers. nd whan he was burn, they made hym chrysten, and calledTycolas. That is a manncs name ; but he kepeth the name ofild; for he chose kepe vertues, meknes and symplenes, andLit malyce. Also we rede, whyle he lay in hys cradel, he fastedesday and Fryday. Thus he lived all hys lyfttues with this childes name; and therefore chyldren don hym. ip before all other saynts. it in another old book we find another anecdote,ih does not speak so well for the meknes ofdisposition ; for it is said that at the great?aril of Nice he had a very lively dispute withher divine named Arius, in the course of whichsaint gave his heretical opponent a sound boxte ear.
