View ENE inside Iron Age wheelhouse I at Jarlshof settlement, Sumburgh, Shetland, Scotland, UK, showing the central hearth, radial piers & compartments. A circular drystone-built house in which piers projecting from the perimeter create sleeping & storage areas & help to support a corbelled &/or timber-framed roof of turf or thatch: an early 1st millennium AD timber round house built in stone with piers arranged like the spokes of a wheel. Some wheelhouses appear to have changed function over the years being used as workshops or stores, & it has been suggested that some were used for ritual purposes.
