The design is by Mr. G. P. Hutchinson,of the firm of James Powell & Sons, at whoserenowned glass works in Whitefriars the executionwas carried out by a process with which the nameof the firm is closely associated. The term opussectile or cut work used to describe it is of courseof ancient origin, but as revived and developedby Messrs. Powell & Sons theprocess differs in variousparticulars from that followedby the mural decorators ofantiquity, to whom the useof hydrofluoric acid em-ployed in the modernmethod for eating away theglass to give effect to theunderlying layers of goldwas of course unknown.
