Farmer's magazine (January-December 1920) . illion trees, off-set by a compai-atively negligible element of loss. Last year the production was 1,500,000 barrels, but owing to the difficulties of getting fertilizers andspray materials during the war years, there had beena tendency to neglect the spraying operations, whilethe circumscribed market, occasioned by the embargoon export, made the growers somewhat doubtful ofthe future of the apple industry. The effect of thislack of interest was quickly felt in the orchards andthe last years crop while a fair one in quantity wasfar below normal in quality. Fortunately the neglectwas a matter of only a short duration, and its effectswere not deep seated. The change in the situation atonce brought a return to the old systematic methodsof handling and spraying, with the result that while-this years crop will probably be well below that oflast year in the matter of quantity, it will show asplendid recovery in the matter of quality. It isestimated now that the pack will grade 40 per cent. y.
