A ground plot of ye strong fort of Charlemont in Ireland with the Town, River, Marshes, Boggs & places adjacent &ct. Artist/engraver/cartographer: Captain Samuel Hobson. Provenance: "A true and impartial history of the most material occurrences in the kingdom of Ireland during the two last years with the present state of both armies : published to prevent mistakes, and to give the world a prospect of the future success of Their Majesties arms in that nation / written by an eye-witness to the most remarkable passages.", by George Warter Story, London: Printed for Ric. Chiswell. Type: Antique 17th century copperplate map. The map was published within Story's continuation of his "Impartial History of the Wars of Ireland" (1693), for which Captain Samuel Hobson is believed to have contributed the maps. He was listed as a Williamite rebel against King James in the King’s 1689 Act of Attainder - subject to confiscation of his property - but he lived to see the king beaten at the Battle of the Boyne and forced into exile. His great-great grandson William Hobson was the future governor of New Zealand and the virtual founder of that country.
