Were anyone carryingout such designs as 166 or 167, it would be desirable toleave out the finer pen-work indicating shading, and alsosome of the details of the ships. The white line, too, leftaround some of the forms should be omitted, as it tends toconfuse the design, which is quite full enough withoutadding to it. POKER WORK. 229. On light wood finer work can be attempted, and I haveseen some poker-work panels which were very elaborateand none the less effective. Colour can certainly beintroduced with considerable effect in combination withpoker work, and some interesting experiments might bemade by rubbing colour into some of the burnt lines, andthen take the surplus off with a rag, in this way gettingaccidental effects which are often far before any that are■designedly done.
