Ammonites (/ˈæmənaɪts/) are an extinct group of marine invertebrate animals in the subclass Ammonoidea of the class Cephalopoda. These molluscs are more closely related to living coleoids ( octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish) than they are to shelled nautiloids such as the living Nautilus species.
