Group portrait of the scientists who participated in the first Solvay international conference of physics in 1911. The Belgian chemist Ernest Solvay (1838- 1922, third seated from left) is probably best remembered for financing the Solvay international conferences of physics, chemistry and sociolology which were periodically held in Brussels. Most of the new ideas of quantum physics, atomic models and cosmology were developed in the physics conferences. The best known scientists here include: a young Albert Einstein (second from left, standing), Marie Curie (second from left, seated) and behind her Ernest Rutherford.
