D'Urville attacking Tonga. 1863 illustration of the French Antarctic explorer and naval officer Jules Dumont d'Urville (1790-1842) attacking Tonga from his ship Astrolabe. In 1826 d'Urville began an expedition to find the missing explorer La Perouse during which he surveyed many Pacific islands, including Tonga. During 1837-1840 he sailed to Antarctica and discovered the Adelie coast (named after his wife) and Joinville Island. His observations helped to prove that Antarctica was a large continent.
