Alexander H. Stevens (1812-1883) served as the Confederate vice-president during the American Civil War (1861-1865). He served as governor of Georgia from 1883 until his death. He entered politics in 1836 - the Georgia House of Representatives, and then in the 1842, the Georgia Senate.
