James Simpson ; bornMonquhitter, 19 April1885 ; educated at thePublic School thereand the GrammarSchool, Aberdeen;graduated 1907 withFirst Class Honours inMental Philosophyand Second ClassHonours in Classics;awarded the HuttonPrize and Bain GoldMedal in Philosophy on graduation ; FullertonScholar in Philosophy, and Gladstone MemorialPrizeman, 1907. Studied Divinity at New Col-lege, Edinburgh, and was missionary at Tay-nuilt during the summer of 1911. Assistant inSt. Bernards Church, Edinburgh, 1911-13 ;Minister of Moss Street Church, Elgin,. 1914. He was a man with a distinguishedmind, a singularly generous nature, and a rarelove of the truth. From a sense of duty and with no naturalinclination for soldiering, Simpson enlisted inFebruary 1915 in the Inns of Court Battalion,and was in training in London till 25 December1916. He went to Ripon in January 1917, amonth later was commissioned, and crossed toFrance with the 6th Seaforths. After a shorttraining at Etaples he was transferred to the 4thSeaforths, this Battalion, which formed part ofthe Armys Shock troops having been almostdepleted of its officers. His company foughtfor a time at Ypres and were sent in October tothe region of Arras. On Sunday evening, 7October 1917, during a severe bombardmentwhilst his men were holding part of the line atWaucourt, Simpson was proceeding down thecommunication trench, when he was struck by ashell and killed instantaneously.
