The Washington Square Arch, the romanesque style marble triumphal arch, construction for which commenced in 1890 and was completed in 1892 when it replaced the wooden structure that had been erected in 1889. The purpose of the Washington Square Arch was to mark the centennial year of the first President’s inauguration and today it stands in the grounds of the Washington State Park, in Lower Manhattan, New York City.
