Dr Gertrude Elion, US biochemist and pharmacologist and winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize for medicine. This was in recognition of over 40 years of work in developing a range of drugs to fight leukaemia, malaria, gout, organ transplant rejection, herpes virus infection and bacterial infection. Elion shared the prize with Dr George Hitchings, a colleague at Burroughs-Wellcome Research Laboratories in the since 1945 and Sir James Black, of Kings College Hospital Medical School, London.
