Cornelius Newton Hliss Cornelius Newton Bliss, American merchant and politician;born in Fall River, Mass., January 26, 1833; clerk in NewOrleans, subse(]uently in Boston and in 1866 was taken as apartner in the commission business of J. S. & E. Wriglit & com-pany of the latter city; in 1881 his firm was merged into thatof Bliss, Fabyon & Co. of New York; chairman of the republi-can state committee, 1887-1888 and treasurer of the republicannational committee of 1892, 1896, 1900 and 1904; secretary ofthe interior in President McKinlcys cabinet, 1897-1898. Anattempt was made to draw him into the controversy broughtabout by the charges of Alton B.
