He ransackedthe buildings of the dissolved monasteries and the bookshops ofEurope for manuscripts of Early English chronicles, many ofwhich he edited himself, while for some he supervised the workof other editors. He got Saxon types founded, and he projecteda dictionary of the Anglo-Saxon language. He was himself thelearned author of voluminous works on the early history of theChurch in Britain, and was especially the historian of his ownsee. At his death he bequeathed his own magnificent Ubrary tohis beloved college at ~ 0
