The Italian agricultural landscape is characterised by the remains of ancient monuments. Here we see from above two of the so-called Orlando Towers emerging from the greenery of a hazel grove at Capranica in the province of Viterbo, along the ancient Cassia consular road. These remains are nothing more than a Roman funerary monument dating back to the 1st century BC and a medieval bell tower, the only remaining evidence of the ancient Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria in Campis (10th century AD). The funerary monument in the foreground consists of a square base, surmounted by a cylindrical body, with a total height of sixteen metres. Originally it was probably covered with slabs of peperino and the niches visible on the surface may have contained bas-reliefs with images of the deceased of rich Roman families.
