Abraham by Lorenzo Monaco

Abraham by Lorenzo Monaco circa 1408-10, tempera on wood, gold ground. Considered a masterpiece of Lorenzo Monaco, the leading late Gothic painter in Florence. Abraham, the founding father of the Jewish nation of Israel, was a man of great faith and obedience to the will of God. His name in Hebrew means "father of a multitude." Originally called Abram, or "exalted father," the Lord changed his name to Abraham as a symbol of the covenant promise to multiply his descendants into a great nation that God would call his own. Abraham is given a high position of respect in three major world faiths, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In Judaism he is the founding father of the Covenant, the special relationship between the Jewish people and God - a belief which gives the Jews a unique position as the Chosen People of God. Islam focuses on Abraham more than either Judaism or Christianity. Authentic muslim sources assert that Muhammad is a descendant of Abraham through Ishmael. Abraham does not loom so large in Christianity as he does in Judaism and Islam - it is Jesus as the Messiah who is central to Christianity, and the idea of the supernatural Christ is what separates Christianity from the other two religions
