The table on the next page has been prepared fromthe limited data at hand. In Illinois in 1820, and from 1870 to 1910 the percentageof population in the occupations was below that of the entirecountry, rising steadily, however, from in 1820 to in1910. Starting with per cent of the occupied populationengaged in agriculture in 1820, this predominance of the agricul-tural occupation in Illinois has suffered a remarkable virtual absence of slaves in Illinois in 1850 and 1860 leavesa greater comparative value in the occupation statistics for thosedates in the case of Illinois than for the countr
