In July,1864, a concerted movement was made up the StonoRiver by General Foster and Admiral Dahlgren. Thisexpedition, well conceived, failed for want of energeticcarrying out on the part of some of the army column under Colonel Hoyt actually captured FortJohnson, but, being unsupported, were made December 12, 1864, General Sherman having success-fully accomplished his march to the sea, reached thevicinity of Savannah, and Admiral Dahlgren immediatelyestablished communication with him, and made the bestpossible disposition of the vessels under his commandto assist the army in taking possession of Savannah,which was occupied by Sherman on December 21, February 18, 1865, the movements of Shermansarmy caused the evacuation of Charleston by the Con-federate forces, and Admiral Dahlgren at once movedhis ves
