Later, whenthe storm of the Revolution broke, this place, wherethe first threatenings were heard, was the most impc v-erished by the contest and the most persevering in thefight; but she came out triumphant, with a record wellmeriting the honors received in 1797, when she wasmade the capital of the Empire State. After peacewas again established and the routine of business takenup, Albany became the centre of the entire trade ofWestern New York. Fultons steamboats began to run between Albanyand New York as early as 1809, and this commercialactivity and contact with the world gave an impulseto the city which has made itself felt all along theHudson.
