This European species is exactly like the Amer-ican except that it is said to average a triflesmaller. It is occasionally found in Goose frcnil eel 1 inn: . 171a. American White-fronted Goose. Anser albifrons gambeli. Range.—Whole of North America, breeding inthe Arctic regions and wintering south to theGulf coast; not common on the Atlantic coastduring migrations. These birds may be recognized by their mottledplumage, dark head and white forehead. Thisspecies is more abundant than any of the pre-ceding and nests in large colonies along the arc-tic coast and in Alaska. Their nests are made ofdried grasses, feathers and down and are placedon the ground in a slight depression. Fromfour to nine eggs are laid; these have a dull buffground.
