Phototransistors

A phototransistor is a bipolar transistor whose base-collector junction is exposed to light. When a photon is absorbed in the junction region, an electron-hole pair is created and the photocurrent produced is then amplified as in a normal transistor. Shown here are NPN silicon phototransistors manufactured by Motorola (model MRD310). The outside diameter of the TO-18 package shown is mm. Photo Dec 2007.
