Fluorescent tube lighting, internal components. These tubes contain mercury vapour through which voltage is passed by an electrical starter device (green, far left). This causes the gas to emit short-wave ultraviolet light. This impacts a phosphor coating on the inside of the tube. This coating fluoresces to produce the light shown. The devices at right, between the two tubes, are electrical ballast, designed to control the current flow to prevent overload.
