His grandfather Henry Pnirns, was the first white child bornwest of the Allegheny mountains, whose parents were killed b) theIndians when he was an infant, and he was found in the woods by a , who reared him as his son. Mr. Evans received his education inthe public and private schools of Pittsburgh. He chose the i)rofessionof medicine, but after studying for a year or more, his health failed andhe was obliged to give it up, when he entered a rolling mill and learnedto be a heater.
