If you wish to go to the root of the subject, the primarymeaning of the word is pretty, which makes it all the more appropriate for ourcity. Early in March, 1834, Albert W. Bowen, a physician in pursuit of a loca-tion, came to this vicinity and boarded a while with Lewis Kerchival. He hadthe sagacity to foresee that a town would grow up in this locality, and made aclaim on Section 2, in this township. He also built a small frame house on Section10, near where the Union School House now stands, in which he lived after.
