Four essentialpoints are kept in mind for each loco-motive built. First: Such apparatus is selected aswill meet the service conditions underwhich the locomotive is to operate. Second: The apparatus on the loco-motive is mounted in such a way thateach part will operate to the best ad-vantage. Third: The apparatus is arranged soas to give easy access to all parts. Fourth : The apparatus is mounted insuch a way as not to require unneces-sary expense for equipping and maintain-ing. To accomplish the above all of the main-circuit apparatus, i. e., the apparatushandling or controlling the electric cur-rent to the motors is mounted in thecenter of the locomotive, with an aisleeither side, and surrounded with suitablemetal screens as a protection against acci-dental contact.
